Towards a Modern Industrial State and the Evolution of China's Labor Markets during the Reforms Seminar
Exclusive meeting January 26, 2004
11:00 - 13:00

China's economy is in transition from agriculture to non agriculture and its population is shifting from rural to urban. In the nineties, migration has become the dominant form of off-farm activity, has been increasingly dominated by young workers and has expanded most rapidly in relatively well-off areas. Will these trends continue over the next twenty years ? What are their implications for China's future development ?

Scott Rozelle is professor at University of California, Davis, Department of Agricultural and Resources Economics. His research on China focuses on three general themes : agricultural policy ; the emergence of markets in the transition process and its implication for equity and efficiency; the economics of poverty and inequality. His papers have been published in top academic journals, and he is widely recognized as one of the leading economists in the U.S. with expertise on China's agricultural sector and rural economy.
